How to care for synthetic insulation

Synthetic insulation mimics the lightweight warmth and softness of natural down, while better maintaining thermal performance when wet. In addition, a durable water repellent (DWR) finish allows the fabric to shed light rain and snow, allowing the product to provide weather protection in unpredictable conditions.

Helping to extend the lifetime of your product, we provide care labels on all of our products and recommend you refer to these ahead of your first wash. Improper care can compromise breathability, water repellency, and overall product durability.

How do I wash my synthetic insulated jacket?

1. Check the wash care label
All Montane clothing and equipment comes with instructions on the care labels. Take a look at these and follow this advice.

2. Close all zips
Make sure to remove any items from your pockets and close up all open zips on the jacket and any velcro.

3. Place your garment in the washing machine
We recommend using a non-biological detergent and no fabric softener. Once clean run a service (or rinse) cycle to remove any excess detergent.

4. Drying directions
For drying, double check the care labels, and if using a tumble dryer please use a low heat.

How do I rejuvenate the loft of the Primaloft Thermoplume in my jacket?

To effectively rejuvenate the loft of the Primaloft Thermoplume in your jacket, it is essential that it is tumble dried. Do this on a low heat setting, inserting 2-3 dryer balls or tennis balls to aid even drying, and prevent the insulation from clumping.

Once the jacket begins to dry it will start to loft again, at which stage the garment can be very gently shaken to agitate and redistribute the insulation. Repeat this process at 15 minute intervals - maintaining a low heat - until your jacket feels fully dry and lofted. Line drying is not recommended for best performance.

How do I care for my synthetic insulated jacket?
Some synthetic insulated products are treated with a durable water repellant (DWR) finish, to help shed light rain showers. If you think this needs rejuvenating, you can spray the outside of the product with a reputable DWR re-proofer.

Suppliers for re-proofers include Grangers, Nikwax, Storm and Fibertec. Make sure your product is fully clean and re-proof while still wet. Once applied, dry according to care label instructions. Tumble drying on a low heat may help to activate the DWR (please check the instructions on the bottle).

Drip Dry your synthetic jacket

Some synthetic insulated jackets and garments can be tumble dried, please refer to the care label on your product. Montane does not recommend that you dry clean or bleach your synthetic insulation clothing.
